Herbal treatments are time-honored remedies that may help treat disease. Herbs can cause side effects, however, and interact with certain medications, dietary supplements or even other herbs. Prior to taking herbs or any dietary supplement, talk to your doctor to make sure that doing do is appropriate for your specific situation.

Herbs that may help in the treatment of migraines include:

Butterbur - Certain scientific studies have suggested that taking butterbur may help in the reduction of both the duration and frequency of a migraine attack, especially when they are taken regularly. Additional medical research is necessary to determine whether or not butterbur is effective in the prevention of migraine headaches. Butterbur extracts have the potential to cause liver damage, so if you are considering trying butterbur to manage your migraines, talk to your doctor about it first.

Feverfew - Feverfew has long been used to manage headaches, and several scientific studies have shown that feverfew might help in the prevention and treatment of migraines. In one scientific study of individuals with migraine headaches, those people who took feverfew supplements for 4 months on a daily basis, enjoyed a decrease in the number of migraine episodes as well as a decrease in symptoms, such as pain, and nausea and vomiting.

Feverfew should be taken with caution because it may raise the risk of abnormal bleeding, and should be avoided in those taking anticoagulant medications such as aspirin, warfarin or clopidogrel. In addition, women who are pregnant or nursing should avoid taking feverfew. If you have allergies to ragweed, you might also have a feverfew allergy.

Although there are no definitive medical or scientific studies demonstrating the efficacy of these herbs in the treatment of migraine headaches, they are occasionally suggested in the management of various types of headaches, including migraines. Individuals who take anticoagulant medications or who have platelet disorders should avoid taking the following herbs:

Dong quai - Ask your health care provider before you take dong quai, because it may interact with certain medications or contribute to complications in those with some cancers.
